Description : The Government of India launched the centrally sponsored National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) in May 2008 during the XI Plan period through the Department of School Education & Literacy, MHRD. The primary motive and purpose of this scheme is to award scholarships to children belonging to the economically weaker sections, who are normally found to drop out of school before completing the elementary and secondary levels of education. By receiving this scholarship, the children of the underprivileged sections are not only benefited during their secondary and senior secondary stages but also feel motivated and inspired to compete academically with their elite counterparts without burdening their parents. The scheme also aims at promoting equity, public accountability and innovation in Secondary education.
